THE TRIANGLE PROJECT
In 2024, more than half of the world population will be able to vote in national or regional elections. There will be key elections in Pakistan, Indonesia, Belarus, Senegal, Iran, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, Panama, Lithuania, Mexico, Belgium, European Parliament, Rwanda, Mozambique, Uruguay, United States, Austria, Croatia, India, Namibia, South Africa, UK and Venezuela, among others.
2023 was the hottest year ever on record, by a long distance, with record emissions of 40b tonnes of CO2-eq, 36.8b tonnes of which coming from fossil fuels, an increase of 1.1% from 2022.
Even if elections are badly contaminated by a conformity-oriented spirit, with bad or irrelevant information being pushed into the mainstream, electoral campaigns are periods in which hegemony shakes and there are some degrees of openness to wider debates. Even if the results of elections are not the key object of campaigns held during this period, its potential for impact is undeniable. The combination of action cycles, communicational disruptive campaigns and improvement of direct connection to progressive media has the potential to unleash new waves of mobilisation and growth for the climate justice movement.
The main debate in elections this year will not revolve around climate without a massive effort and narrative shift from the movement. Further, when this debate happens, it will be between Greenwashed Capitalism and Denialism (whether in the form or saying it is too expensive and acting against the effects of climate chaos, namely migrants).
The TRIANGLE PROJECT proposes to articulate three main components of a general approach for electoral periods:
